Monthly storage rates on Amazon.com.au
| Size | January to September | October to December |
|---|---|---|
| Standard size | A$37.00 per m³ | A$51.80 per m³ |
| Oversize | A$34.20 per m³ | A$48.00 per m³ |
Amazon charges on the daily average volume your stock takes up in its fulfilment centres over the month, measured on each unit as packaged and ready to ship. So it is not what you had on the 1st or the 31st. A pallet that lands on the 20th is charged for about a third of the month. The October to December rate is 40% higher than the rest of the year for standard-size stock (A$51.80 against A$37.00).
What storage costs per unit
Unit volume in m³ is length × width × height in cm ÷ 1,000,000. Multiply by the rate.
| Product | Packaged size | Volume | Per unit per month, Jan to Sep | Per unit per month, Oct to Dec |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phone case | 20 x 14 x 1 cm | 0.00028 m³ | A$0.01 | A$0.01 |
| Foam yoga block | 23 x 15 x 10 cm | 0.00345 m³ | A$0.13 | A$0.18 |
| Steam iron | 32 x 17 x 14 cm | 0.007616 m³ | A$0.28 | A$0.39 |
| Boxed cushion insert | 45 x 34 x 20 cm | 0.0306 m³ | A$1.13 | A$1.59 |
For small, dense products storage is a rounding error. For bulky ones it isn't. A cushion insert that sits for three months over Christmas costs A$1.59 × 3 = A$4.77 a unit in storage alone. On a A$34.95 sale that is 13.6% of the price before you've paid for the product, FBA or ads.
Worked example: 500 irons over the Christmas quarter
500 units × 0.007616 m³ = 3.808 m³. At the October to December rate that is 3.808 × A$51.80 = A$197.25 a month. Holding the same stock in September would cost 3.808 × A$37.00 = A$140.90. The Q4 rate costs you an extra A$56.35 a month on this one SKU. If you only sell 150 a month, sending 500 in October means paying the higher rate on stock you won't sell until next year. Send what you'll sell by early January and top up. The reorder point calculator helps you set that number.
The aged inventory surcharge
On top of monthly storage, Amazon charges a surcharge on stock that has been in its fulfilment centres for more than 270 days. It is assessed on the 15th of each month.
| Age of stock | Surcharge | 100 irons (0.7616 m³) |
|---|---|---|
| 271 to 300 days | A$155 per m³ | A$118.05 |
| 301 to 330 days | A$175 per m³ | A$133.28 |
| 331 to 365 days | A$185 per m³ | A$140.90 |
| Over 365 days | A$370 per m³ or A$0.12 per unit, whichever is greater | A$281.79 |
The surcharge is charged on top of normal storage. 100 irons over a year old cost A$281.79 in surcharge that month, plus A$28.18 of ordinary storage at the January to September rate. That is A$3.10 a unit, every month, until you sell, remove or dispose of them.
When the A$0.12 per unit minimum applies
The per-unit figure only matters for small items. 1,000 phone cases take up 0.28 m³. At A$370 per m³ that is A$103.60, but 1,000 × A$0.12 is A$120.00, so you pay A$120.00. The crossover is where a unit is smaller than 0.12 ÷ 370 = 0.000324 m³, about 324 cm³. Anything smaller than that pays per unit once it is over 365 days old.
Low-inventory fees
As of 12 October 2026, Amazon's Australian fee page lists monthly storage and the aged inventory surcharge, and no low-inventory-level fee. The US store does have one. If you sell in both, don't copy a US fee model across to Australia. Check your Seller Central fee reports for anything new.
Putting storage into your margin
Storage is a per-unit cost like any other. Work out the months a unit typically sits before it sells, multiply by its monthly storage, and put the result in the storage field of the Amazon profit margin calculator. The inventory cash flow guide covers how much stock to hold, and Amazon FBA fees in Australia covers the fulfilment fee for each size tier.
Stock-outs drop keyword rank as well as sales. If you cut stock to avoid storage fees, log your rank around the restock using the Amazon rank tracker method.
